Pelagianism

Pelagianism is a heresy that was put forward by a British monk named Pelagius in the 4th and 5th centuries.

Pelagianism teaches that original sin is not a full and total corruption of human nature, but rather an external spot or blemish. Thus, for Pelagians, human nature retains the ability and the free will to choose both good and evil.

Pelagian theology is found in Arminianism and American Revivalism, both of which emphasize the freedom of the will and decision theology.

Pelagianism is rejected in the Apology of the Augsburg Confession, Article XVIII, and the Formula of Concord, Articles I & II (Epitome and Solid Declaration).

See also Semi-Pelagianism.
